Balanced Math Program
From OpenContent Curriculum
BSSD's Balanced Math Program is a direct result of trainings done by Jan Christinson of the "Leadership and Learning Center". We are using his book "5 Easy Steps to a Balanced Math Program", coauthored by Larry Ainsworth.
The 5-Easy Steps to a Balanced Math Program
Step 1: Computational Skills (Math Review and Mental Math)
- Math Review: Students practice procedural mathematics and computational skills every day for the first 15-20 minutes of class. The emphasis is on number sense and computational standards specific to the math levels being taught.
Here are some examples used by a teacher in this district. Feel free to use or adapt them for your class. (I have very similar ones for Levels 5-8 classes. E-mail me if you want some. Mary Huntington, Shishmaref)
- Mental Math: Students practice mental math several times each week in order to become skillful in computing math problems mentally.
Step 2: Problem Solving
Step 3: Conceptual Understanding
Step 4: Mastery of Math Facts
Step 5: Common Formative Assessment
