Objectives

Students will be able to identify their favorite Iditarod musher, describe that musher and analyze why that person is their favorite musher.

Procedure

Direct students to the iditarod page's musher listing. Give them some time to look through the different mushers that will be participating in this year's iditarod. Have the students write 5 reasons why that person is their favorite. Help students write a paragraph with a main idea and supporting details as to who is their favorite musher.

Extensions

During the Iditarod, I want each student to track their favorite musher. Perhaps they could calculate miles per hour, average time between checkpoints. They could also investigate what prominent Alaska geographic features the mushers cross (SS3-5A.14).
