## **STANDARD UNPACKED:**

**KNOW**

- What is an Improper Fraction?
- What is a Mixed Number?
- What is a Whole Number?

**ABLE TO DO**

- Model/Show improper fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers using manipulatives and pen & paper.
- Change models from one form to the other (from improper fractions to mixed numbers/whole numbers and back).
- Recognize equivalent fractions.

## **RESOURCES**

Fraction Manipulatives This website has a brief definition of improper fractions and mixed numbers. It shows how to convert between the two and provides a random problem generator.

## **INSTRUCTION STRATEGIES:**

## **ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES**

Pre-assessment: Check student's understanding before the lesson. "All of our fractions so far have involved our numerator being smaller than our denominator. We have had a smaller piece of a whole. What happens when our numerator is larger than our denominator? Give me a thumbs up if you think you know what will happen or a thumbs down if you're not sure." Or something like that.

Assessment During the Lesson: Keep your eyes open while you teach and while the students practice with the manipulatives. Once the students feel comfortable grouping the manipulative into whole numbers and remaining fractions give them a short worksheet to assess their ability.

Assessment After the Lesson: Once the students have completed the lesson give them some practice work to take home.
