The Mission of Shishmaref School Through a collaborative effort Involving teachers, community, and students, using quality educational programs, is to educate all students to become responsible, self-supporting, and productive citizens, who strive to reach their maximum potential

Shishmaref school and community pride themselves in being considered one of the friendliest villages in Alaska. Our school has a student population of approximately 183 K-12 students and has an early childhood 3yr & 4yr olds with approximatemly 33 students.

Our students are studying and learning in th Quality School Model, where students are responsibile for showing proficency in standards contained in different content areas. Our students are able to progress through the leveling process according to our pacing guide. It is our hope that the Shishmaref students will be able to meet all of the BSSD requirements and have passed the High School Qualifing Exam prior to graduation. Students meeting these requirements are encouraged to pursue post secondary classes while still in high school.

Our students are engaged in the Success For All reading program from kinderoots through Stand Alone and Reading Edge through the high school level. We know reading well is the key to be successful in all areas of school and life.

Our school staff both classified and certified have shown a real commitment to the education of our school students as evidenced by the longevity of staff. Our staff make a real effort to be involved in the community, and encourage the community to be involved in the school. Parents and community members are very supportive of the students activities. Elders presence in the school on all occasions and acting as one of the first teachers and advisors to students enhances the can do attitude shown by our students. Students, staff, and community members are encouraged to contribute to this narrative.

Content Area Standards

The Bering Strait School District's curriculum is divided into nine content areas. Each content area has content and performance standards divided up into a number of levels for organiation. These do not necessarily correspond to any grade level, and the district does not use grade level designations except for state mandated testing purposes.

Progress through the BSSD curriculum is dependent upon mastery of the standards in each level as indicated by the designators of "Emerging", "Developing", "Proficient", and "Advanced". End of Level assessments are given, and after students demonstrate their skill to at least "Proficient" status, they can advance.

Graduation levels in each content are approved by the BSSD School Board. When the graduation level in each content area is attained, and the Alaska High School Graduation Equivalency Examination (HSGQE) is passed, a diploma is awarded.
