MODIFIED STANDARD:

Feel free to edit standard as you see fit. Use the discussion or Talk page to explain your reasons for changes.

STANDARD UNPACKED:

KNOW The student will know basic first aid principles.

ABLE TO DO The student will be able to state basic first aid principles (i.e., direct pressure to stop bleeding, hypothermia prevention, and wound treatment).

RESOURCES

INSTRUCTION STRATEGIES:

Have a nurse or health-aide come into the classroom and share some basic first-aid in various situations (cut at the playground, choking at home, frostbite in the country, etc.) When that is done, have the group pair up. They choose a type of first-aid and using different resources, they identify the first-aid steps. With this information, they create a short skit that shows the situation, what injury occured, and demonstrates the basic first-aid needed to treat the injury. When the skit is over, have the class identify the injury and the steps used to treat the injury.

PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES:

After direct instruction on the first-aid in various situations, each student creates a first-aid poster to take home. On this poster, they must include first-aid for 5 or 6 different types of situations that can occur in their household. Laminate and wala...just might save a life.
